Introduction of “Old community, new green” environmental protection public service project
The“old community, new green”environmental protection program was jointly initiated by Sino-Ocean Land, Beijing TV, Beijing Volunteers Association Foreign Enterprise Branch and the Beijing Green Movement Promotion in 2006 to help regenerate old communities. The program organizes community and educational activities and provides financial aid to improve the environment with a view to encouraging residents to be more proactive in protecting the environment.
Brandishing the slogan of “old community, new green; small changes, big result; no waste, sustainable; whole society, one mind”, the program advocates using simple but effective means to improve the living conditions in old communities. Since 2006, more than 500 communities in Beijing have initiated various environmental protection activities. The Sino-Ocean Green Fund has assisted some 100 communities and schools to start their own environmental projects. In response to the State’s call to conserve energy and reduce waste in 2010, “old community, new green” added “zero emission”, “zero waste”, “home-grown plants competition”, “the green ambassador” to existing training programs and activities.
To encourage students in senior high schools to get involved in environmental protection, “old community, new green” launched the “Innovative Environmental Protection Competition” in 2006 for students in universities. The 4-year campaign was supported by 100 senior high schools and enjoyed widespread attention from all quarters.
As consultants of “old community, new green”, the Beijing Environmental Protection Fund and Beijing Green Action Promotion provide the scientific data and guidance for the implementation of various projects and activities. Meanwhile, under the auspice of the Department of Environmental Protection Education Center, “old community, new green” has spread to 17 provinces and cities nation-wide and some 20 million people are involved in and also beneficiaries of the activities.
